Meet Leila Brahmia, Senior Subsea Engineer, ABL France

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

My workday varies a lot from one day to another. I act as project manager, owners engineer or marine warranty surveyor on various renewables projects. As such, I could spend an entire day with clients or partners and another day focusing on technical documentation review and in another case, I could spend my entire day on calls with our surveyors on the field.

Additionally, with France in the process of upgrading their port infrastructure to accommodate floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT), I spend the rest of my time working on ways ABL France can help to realise these plans.

Following my studies in Civil Engineering and Building Engineering I acquired most of my technical and field experience through my career in the Oil & Gas industry. With the dawn of renewable energy in France I saw an opportunity to apply my skillset to make my contribution towards the transition to renewables energy.

I saw the opportunity at ABL and I can say I feel like I’m making a genuine contribution in the field since day one.

I am project managing the MWS on the MOG2 Princess Energy Island project. The aim of this project is to install a platform which has the capacity of 3.5 GW of renewable energy. This project is an important step for Belgium to it’s energy ambitions in line with the targets set by the European Union.

This island, which has the size of 12 football fields, is made of 23 caissons of 20,000 tonnes apiece and is located 45km off the coast. The challenge is big, the technical requirements are very specific, and the transport & installation constraints are massive.

This is an exciting time for the energy transition in France. Rte, Frances’s Transition System Operator, has recently shared the different scenarios about the electrical power production in France by 2050. In each of these scenarios, Offshore Wind Energy will play a huge role. Moving forward, to achieve these ambitions, an upgrade of the existing infrastructure is required, especially ports & harbours. But one thing is for certain – We have lots of amazing adventures to look forward to!
