Meet Christoph Grams, Marine Consultant – Master Mariner, ABL Germany

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

What does your day-to-day look like at ABL?

“Every day at ABL is unique and dynamic as my role is incredibly varied and always brings new challenges.

As such, one day I might be working out of our Hamburg office, while the next could find me in the North Sea, on a wind turbine installation vessel as marine warranty surveyor (MWS) or in the Baltic Sea, inspecting vessel Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems”.

What inspired you to join your industry?

Originally, I wanted to become a mariner to travel the world. When I got involved with heavy loads and heavy shipments, I became fascinated with the process of handling over-scaled cargo. This was also an important factor leading to me joining ABL, as the logistics and operations of the offshore energy industry, especially wind, are in line with my interests. Today, I can contribute to the industry where I can leverage my experience and make significant impact.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

Currently, I am focused on the future-oriented development of DP systems. I’m working on innovations that aim to support DP operators, which is an exciting step towards enhancing our capabilities in the field.

What does the future look like in energy and oceans in Germany?

The expansion of wind energy in Germany, both in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, is set to continue at a rapid pace. The government’s ambitious targets for growth are driving forward significant developments. With our expertise, we are committed to supporting these initiatives and addressing the challenges that come with busier seas and the proliferation of offshore wind farms.

What do you enjoy most about working as part of the ABL Group team in Germany?

“One of the things I enjoy most is contributing my extensive operational experience from onboard vessels to the ABL team in Hamburg.

I’m able to offer practical insights and real-world examples that enrich our discussions and bring a touch of humour to our engineering team”.
