ABL March Maritime Market Briefing

Join us for the March Maritime Market Briefing on the following topic:

The UK Ports Industry – The Port Marine Safety Code and the challenges to safety and compliance

The United Kingdom is a maritime and island nation and ports are critical nodes for the import and export of goods. 95% of imports and exports by volume are through our ports. The ports industry contributes around £37 billion directory in turnover to the UK. Indirectly this equates to £74 billion. Ports employ 126,000 people directly  (56% of the maritime sector) and the impact of that is nearly 800,000 jobs indirectly.

The economic contribution of the ports industry is therefore significant, but are ports managed safely? The latest figures show only 56% of harbour authorities self-report compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code (the Code).

The Code was introduced following the Sea Empress grounding and subsequent oil spill off Milford Haven in 1996. It has been in operation for over 20 years. Currently undergoing consultation on its 7th iteration, this technical presentation will revisit the origins of the voluntary Code, its subsequent development, and its impact on safety in ports in the UK. We will unpick the vast legislative framework underpinning safety in UK ports and consider the latest safety statistics and trends for compliance in ports and harbours.

The technical presentation will be followed by a live Q&A.

In the usual format, the market briefing will conclude with a summary of last month’s marine casualty case reports.

The marine casualty case reports will only be presented to in-person attendees.
