AqualisBraemar Looks Towards the Future and Sets the Standard

AqualisBraemar participated in the plenary session of the IEC TC114 marine energy conversion systems committee in Dublin on April 30th and May 1st at Dublin Castle. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is one of the world’s leading organisations which prepares and publishes International Standards. Martin Brown, General Manager of the new Aqualis Aberdeen office, is convenor for the PT20 committee which is developing a ‘New Outline Technical Specification providing Guidance for the Design and Analysis of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) systems.’

Following on from Dublin Martin presented on the 7th of May at All Energy Conference in Glasgow on the new standard and on OTEC developments in general throughout the world. Click here to view the presentation from this event. OTEC is a technology which can provide large scale 24 hours a day 365 days a year baseload electrical power and fresh water for island nations in the tropical oceans and for developed countries via floating systems positioned in international waters. Developments in deep water oil and gas floating production systems have meant that the technology required for floating OTEC systems is now lower risk and much more straight forward compared to the past. AqualisBraemar’s expertise in mooring design/integrity, Naval Architecture design, transportation and installation services etc. are well placed to assist in the design and testing of future OTEC systems.

An indication of the potential for OTEC is that after a 12 month audit led by the European Investment Bank, DCNS and Akuo Energy were awarded €72m under the European Commission NER300 programme for their NEMO (New Energy for Martinique and Overseas) project for the development of an offshore pilot OTEC plant in Martinique in the Caribbean.
