Meet Hossein Ghavimi, Research & Development Manager, ABL AIM London

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

What does your day-to-day look like at ABL?

“Every day I speak with customers and my software team, to make sure we are prioritising and building the right software features to maximise value for our clients and increase utilisation of our products.

I also evaluate new technologies and ideas to identify where we can go in the future. Some of my time is also spent supporting technical bids as well as following up on sales leads.”

What inspired you to join your industry?

I had a keen interest in computers growing up and started an HNC at Aberdeen College when I was 13. After getting accepted to Aberdeen University aged 15 to study Computer Science, I continued my learning journey and after graduating looked for opportunities in the Energy industry in Aberdeen. Being able to apply what I had learnt in the energy industry was fulfilling and I am still here after 16 years.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

We are sponsoring a PhD Industrial Case project in partnership with Salford University, aimed at developing an advanced machine vision system powered by deep learning AI. This innovative system is designed to analyse video footage captured from engineer bodycams, drones, or robots, allowing for real-time monitoring and detection of changes over time. A key objective of the project is to help teams identify potential issues before they escalate, such as detection of bolts turning in plant equipment, which, if left unnoticed, could lead to critical failures.

Additionally, the system will assess the severity of corrosion in plant equipment over time, providing insights that enable more informed decisions regarding maintenance and repairs. Another crucial feature is the system’s ability to automate the process of checking for dropped objects, ensuring that teams maintain a safer working environment. By integrating these capabilities, the technology will empower teams to respond more quickly to changes, improve overall safety, and significantly reduce plant downtime, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency.

What does the future look like in energy and oceans in Europe?

The future is digital. Having access to so much data is overwhelming for our customers. We are working on systems that will allow our customers to make informed data driven decisions to maximise productivity, improve safety and to reduce carbon emissions

What do you enjoy most about working as part of the ABL Group team in London?

The team are very friendly and there are always fun social events happening to get involved in. We recently played rounders in a local park which I had not done since my teens! The view from the office is also inspirational as we can see many London landmarks along the Thames.
