ABL’s Senior Surveyor, Julien Vial, will present our September briefing on ‘From the Northwest Passage to the Northern Sea Route: Underwriting the New Arctic’.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Distinguish real transit traffic from Russia’s domestic cargo — know the difference between end-to-end NSR shipping and Russian export volumes, and which carriers are actually sailing the route versus which have ruled it out.
- Understand why the NSR can’t simply absorb Suez traffic — the draft limits, ice class rules, and mandatory icebreaker escorts that constrain it.
- Understand how the legal regime differs — Russia’s discretionary permit system on the NSR versus the guaranteed right of transit at Suez and Panama, and the unresolved Canada–US dispute over the Northwest Passage.
- Know what a real Arctic casualty looks like — using the Thamesborg grounding in the Northwest Passage to identify what actually drives the risk: poor charting and the lack of nearby salvage capacity.
The technical presentation will be followed by a Q&A and finalised with a summary of last month’s high-cost marine casualties. Marine casualties are for the in person attendees only.
