Meet the Team: Tim Camp

The team at AqualisBraemar LOC shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know AqualisBraemar LOC, but do you know our team?

Tim Camp, Director of Turbine Engineering | OWC

What do you do at OWC?

I’m Director of Turbine Engineering at OWC. On a day-to-day level my work ranges from wind turbine technical due diligence, through offshore wind O&M strategy development, wind farm concept design, floating wind turbine modelling & applied research.

Offshore wind turbines contain nearly every “flavour” of engineering and I enjoy working on a broad technical scope that includes hydrodynamics, structural dynamics, aerodynamics, control & power engineering. I have been involved in standards development and design method development since the early days of offshore wind and have enjoyed seeing the growth of the industry’s experience base. Of course, not every day is full of interesting technical challenges – I have my share of proposal writing and admin too!

What excites you the most about our industry?

As a young engineer – when the UK had only two offshore turbines – my then boss Andrew Garrad said to me, “Don’t worry – one day offshore wind will have its day.” It has been very exciting to see that day come, and indeed to see the prospect of many bright days ahead for the offshore wind industry.

The fall in the cost of offshore wind has been tremendous and it has been exciting to be a part of the resulting growth in capacity. While once labelled as “alternative energy”, wind energy is now part of the core generating capacity in the UK and many other countries. I am also very excited to be working in an industry which will be an important part of the solution to the environmental challenge.

What made you join OWC?

OWC has a great team of enthusiastic experts, covering all technical areas related to offshore – and now onshore – wind. It is a an excellent team to work with. I was formerly with London Offshore Consultants prior to the creation of ABL Group. The merger was a great opportunity for me to step into OWC and to increase my experience of wind farm commercial transactions.

What do you do when you are not working?

Like many engineers who are desk-based during the week, I love opportunities to do “real” engineering at the weekends. I’m currently fitting a new kitchen and building a workshop. Fortunately my wife and children prevent me from turning too much to my inner-geek!
