Meet the Team: Ruth Waters

The team at AqualisBraemar LOC shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know AqualisBraemar LOC, but do you know our team?

Ruth Waters, Naval Architect | Longitude

What do you do at Longitude?

I currently work for Longitude which is my first of four 1-year rotations on the Engineer Development Scheme. It is also my first job since graduating from the University of Strathclyde in June 2020 with a degree in Naval Architecture with Ocean Engineering. I am currently part of the Structures team in Exeter where I mainly undertake hand calculations and computer analysis for vessels which are being mobilised for offshore maintenance. The computer models are generated and analysed using the structural analysis software STAAD. I have also been involved in the preparation of deck layouts and initial stability calculations as part of a preliminary study assessing the viability of offshore windfarm installation using jack-up vessels.

What excites you the most about our industry?

What excites me the most about our industry is the chance to be involved in the transition towards a greener future. Undertaking the different rotations as part of the graduate scheme will hopefully allow me to get involved in a variety of different tasks which are all important in achieving this goal. With this will also come the chance to meet, and work alongside, the wider ABL team which I also look forward to.

What made you join Longitude?

I was instantly very excited to be a part of the ABL Engineer Development Scheme when I heard of all the opportunities which could become available to me at the interview. Now I have the chance to travel to different parts of the world, whilst simultaneously gaining knowledge and experience in the different business sectors that ABL operate in. This a very unique opportunity.

What do you do when you are not working?

My main passions outside of work are fitness, food and being outdoors. One of my main fitness hobbies is CrossFit which I do on weekdays before work. I enjoy this as the team workouts are super motivating and it has been a great way of meeting new people outside of the office. I also enjoy running, paddleboarding and going on cycling trips to explore different parts of Devon. Road cycling is a new hobby for me which I took up during lockdown and I recently completed my first 100-mile ride! Cooking and baking are my other main hobbies as well as going to new cafes/restaurants/pubs with friends and family.
