New Year in New York with the safe arrival of new Staten Island Ferry

What a way for New York City to begin 2022, with the 2nd of 3 new Staten Island Ferries commissioned, SANDY GROUND, joining its fleet of iconic passenger ferries, following the vessel’s safe arrival from Florida, on New Year’s Eve.

Following in the waves of the 1st new Staten Island Ferry, the eponymously named SSG MICHAEL H. OLLIS, safely towed from Florida to New York in summer 2021, SANDY GROUND crossed under New York’s Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on 31st December 2021 (photo below), following a journey across 1,760 nautical miles.

Similar to SSG MICHAEL H. OLLIS, ABL operations in New York were appointed to provide engineering support and marine warranty survey services for the wet tow of the SANDY GROUND from Eastern Shipbuilding Group’s shipyard in Panama City, Florida, to dry dock in West Brighton, New York.

The scope of work included the presence on-board of the marine warranty surveyor throughout the tow along the US East Coast, including weather stops at Tampa and Cape Canaveral, Florida.
