Meet Vangelis Sallis, Consultant Marine Surveyor, ABL Piraeus

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

What does your day-to-day look like at ABL?

The majority of my days are full of hands-on dealing with various types of cases. From H&M to P&I and Yachts, working at the Piraeus office means that no two days are alike. Additionally, I’m actively involved with assisting in the development of more junior members of the team as we are constantly expanding to better support our clients and their needs.

What inspired you to join your industry?

From a very young age I was impressed by the size and the glory of passenger ships when looking at them at ports. Growing up I chose to study Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Following my studies I worked on technical roles in Shipping and ship management companies, yachts, and the Hellenic Coast Guard as civil expert before taking on the role of Consultant Marine Surveyor for ABL, where I get to apply my diverse knowledge and experience on daily basis.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

I’m currently working on a very interesting case of hull damage after the attack of a missile at Red Sea. As I previously said, working on shipping in the Greek market means no two days are alike making it a very rewarding job.

What does the future look like in energy and oceans in Greece?

At this moment the future looks challenging but extremely promising. With the Greek government setting an ambition to deliver at least 2GW of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030 as part of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) a lot of work needs to be done on the infrastructure. From developing electrical interconnection projects across the Aegean Sea to upgrading our port infrastructure to support the current and future offshore wind development the future is looking really bright.

On the maritime sector, with the Greek fleet being the largest privately owned fleet in global shipping, as expected, the Greek market is at the centre of innovation which is very promising but at the same time comes with its own unique set of challenges.
