What do you to at AqualisBraemar LOC (ABL Group)?

I am the Chief Surveyor for the Maritime Business line in Middle East, Africa and India region, based out of ABL’s operations in Dubai.

I deal primarily with insurance related work, including pre-risk and post loss surveying. I look after the day to day running of the maritime business for the region, allocating surveyors to surveys and reviewing their work prior to issue to the market. I liaise with the clients and ensure that all claims are dealt with appropriately and free of conflict.

What inspired you to go into the field you are in?

I was a seafarer for near on 18 years and once married I ended up on multipurpose vessels trading in the region so that I could be home more often. After several years on the same vessels the work became monotonous and offered no more challenges. Being married though and already with a young daughter, going on international trading vessels again was out of the question. After the birth of our second child, we decided that it was time for a change and an opportunity to start as a surveyor came up in Dubai. We decided to take the plunge and a new career started.

What do you enjoy about working at ABL Group?

Being the leading survey company worldwide makes it quite prestigious to work for. The work is varied and we get to meet people from all nationalities and cultures. It is extremely challenging ensuring expectations of our principals are met, but great satisfaction comes after each case is successfully handled.

What is the most exciting aspect of the energy transition for you?

Whilst I do not deal with the greener side of the business, we will get to see new technology on the ocean going fleet of vessels as more sustainable fuels and propulsion systems are developed, which is very interesting to see.

Can you tell us about the most exciting, unusual or challenging project you have worked on?

The most exciting was an MWS job for the load-out of a new jack up barge in South Korea as it presented several challenges that needed to be addressed on the spot.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

Apart from spending time with the family, I enjoy doing DIY as I have always been quite good with my hands (electrical, plumbing, woodwork, etc). I also enjoy taking my car on track days and watching F1, rugby and football (in that order).
