Meet the team: Kelvin Kong, Project Manager DP & Critical Systems | ABL Singapore

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

What does your day to day look like?

My day to day includes routine work like responding to internal and external clients requisitions, supporting vessel technical operators, project stakeholders, vessel charterers, main contractors, and internal team members to address any challenges and follow up on progress of ongoing projects.

I am involved in writing and peer reviews of technical documents for FMEA (failure modes and effects analysis), proving trials program, operations manual, activity specific operating guidance and critical systems analysis reports; usually not necessary all these scopes at the same time in a day.

In addition to that, I have the responsibility of supporting offices and country managers within the Asia Pacific Region for relevant work within the DP & Critical Systems business line. I coordinate periodic engagement with the team to improve internal processes, share latest learnings and industry guidance documents, and market to potential Clients; quite often these happen daily!

What inspired you to join the industry?

Having a background in electronics and control engineering, my first jobs included as a control systems engineer with a thruster systems provider, and systems engineer with a leading company for dynamic positioning systems. These both opened the path towards working with industry leaders, then leading onwards to risk management of offshore vessels.

My past professional experience motivated me to find out more about how this was being rolled out into the offshore industry at that time and inspired me to pursue a career in the offshore assurance and de-risking segment.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

With increased demand of specialised offshore vessels with improved capabilities, we have been working very closely with different stakeholders within both the renewable and oil & gas space – advising on the selection, supporting modification and newbuild of specialised offshore construction, cable laying and wind turbine installation vessels.

Being involved from early stages all the way to operations allows our partners to set the stage for improved operational safety and efficiency during operations.
