Meet Emily McVan, ABL Group Sustainability Advisor | ABL London

At ABL people are our business, and our people are our business. Our teams are constantly expanding, into more locations, in expertise and in sectors of influence, so that our people can truly drive safety and sustainability across our energy and oceans.

Each week we introduce you to another member of our staff, from another country or region, for you to meet the energy behind change…

Emily McVan, ABL Group Sustainability Advisor

What does your day-to-day look like at ABL?

Day-to-day, my work focuses on anything associated with ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) both within ABL Group, and extending to our clients, suppliers, and business partners. I coordinate the ESG Steering Committee and Task Forces to develop and implement our Sustainability strategy, contribute to policy updates, and provide support to ensure accurate and transparent sustainability reporting, in accordance with standards such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

What inspired you to join your industry?

I was inspired to study International Development and to work in Sustainability years ago. After spending two years in Togo, West Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer, primarily working on gender equity projects, I did a master’s in international development. I’ve always been passionate about environmental sustainability, gender equity, and reducing social inequalities. Working in Sustainability allows me to work on these issues in a meaningful way.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

For the past few months, I’ve been working alongside the other members of the Environment Task Force on our Emissions Tracking Pilot Programme. Right now, we’re working to roll out the tracking globally from 1 January 2024, so we can get an idea of our total emissions, with the intention of setting reduction targets and developing strategies and plans to meet these targets. Working on this project is exciting because it’s a tangible effort to evaluate ABL Group’s carbon footprint with the aim of eventually reducing our impact.

What does the future look like in energy and oceans?

I’m hopeful that the future of energy and oceans is positive – but this relies on us taking seriously our responsibility, as a business, to commit to tackling the challenges we’re facing. That means doing our part, both as a business and as individuals, to live sustainably! We need to think more about what we can do to reduce our impact – whether it’s reducing our carbon footprint by decreasing our air travel or being more conscious consumers – and to ensure a just and inclusive energy transition.

What do you do on your personal time?

I enjoy yoga, hiking, reading and I’m a supported of Philadelphia sports team. My favourite book is Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder which was a big inspiration to pursuing a career in sustainability!
