Client: Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Corp.
Location: Jeonnam Province, South Korea
Sector: Renewables
Start Date: November 2022
Top-Line Services: MWS: Transportation & Installation, Vessel surveys, inspections & audits
Project Introduction:
Jeonnam 1 is a 96-MW offshore wind farm located off the coast of Shinan County, Jeonnam Province in the southwest of Korea. Comprised of ten wind turbine generators (WTGs), Jeonnam 1 represents the country’s first commercial offshore wind farm.
The water depth at the site ranges from 5 to 20 metres, with monopile foundations featuring monopiles with diameters of up to 8.5m. The wind farm is scheduled to be operational in 2025.
ABL was appointed as the marine warranty surveyor (MWS) for the transportation and installation (T&I) for the foundations, export cable, inter array cable and wind turbine generator components. The scope of work included providing expert technical reviews, document approvals, vessel inspections and site attendances.
Having successfully completed the installation of the foundations and export/inter array cables, the installation of the first WTG was completed on September 30th 2024. Surveyors from ABL Korea and ABL Singapore attended on site to oversee the successful operation.
Project challenges
- First commercial offshore wind farm project in South Korea required a knowledge transfer of global industry expertise to the local companies.
- Challenges in establishing operational procedures and methods.
- Requirement for knowledge and expertise of international jack-up operations standards.
Solutions
- Providing technical/operational advice based on ABL’s wide global experience and expertise.
- ABL deployed two surveyors during the wind turbine generation installation to ensure that the work was completed without delays including senior expertise from the Singapore office to support with critical points and safety measures.
- Providing additional advice and support during key points of the jack-up procedures and operations.
Results
- A secure operation was accomplished through the combined support of ABL’s Korea and Singapore offices providing engineering support to the project.
- Streamlined operation and minimised delays on the project schedule with on-site technical review.
- Upon the successful completion of the first WTG installation, ABL’s experience and lessons learned on site where communicated to secure all operations for the duration of the project.
- Installation operations of the last WTG components were completed December 2024
