The European Space Agency (ESA) has recognised Aquafarm 2.0, developed by the water management consultants, Hidromod, as a very successful space-based agricultural project, which has been supported through ESA’s commercialisation gateway.

This acknowledgment highlights Aquafarm’s critical role in optimising water resources, improving crop management, and promoting sustainable agriculture through satellite technology and advanced environmental modelling.

Aquafarm is a cutting-edge digital twin platform (powered by Hidromod Aquasafe), integrating real-time data, including satellite data, with AI-driven analytics to create crystal-clear visualisations of water behaviours and forecasting in agricultural scenarios.

It is proven to enhance more accurate decision-making to drive a sustainable agriculture industry.

A Growing User Base of Agricultural and Water Management Leaders

Currently, Aquafarm 2.0 is used by key organizations worldwide, including:

  • IFAP (Instituto de Financiamento da Agricultura e Pescas, Portugal): Since 2021, IFAP uses AquaFarm to monitor crop declarations and validate agricultural subsidy claims across millions of parcels. The platform provides high-resolution satellite data and automated crop analysis, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of CAP compliance and fund allocation.
  • DCCEEW (NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Australia): AquaFarm supported DCCEEW in piloting parcel-scale water balance and anomaly detection tools to monitor irrigation and catchment flows. Active user feedback helped refine the platform, which proved valuable for enhancing water governance in ungauged areas across New South Wales.
  • EDIA (Portugal’s Alqueva Development and Infrastructure Company, Portugal): EDIA leveraged AquaFarm for irrigated crop monitoring, reservoir inflow validation, and water management. Key technical users provided continuous feedback, helping refine the platform’s models and dashboards, and confirming AquaFarm’s value as a core tool for efficient water resource management in one of Europe’s largest irrigation systems.

ESA’s Continued Support for Space-Based Agricultural Solutions

ESA’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) program has played a crucial role in scaling Aquafarm’s success, demonstrating how Earth Observation (EO) data and AI-driven modelling can revolutionize agriculture, water management, and climate resilience.

With growing challenges in food security, water scarcity, and environmental sustainability, projects like Aquafarm 2.0 continue to shape the future of agriculture, proving the immense value of space technology in solving real-world problems.
