ABL’s Mike McLachlan’s awarded the 2024 SOMWS Len Messenger Award
ABL team members attended the recent Society of Offshore Marine Warranty Surveyors (SOMWS) AGM, seminar and dinner last month, an event proudly sponsored by ABL.
At the AGM, Dr. Aureliano Schirippa, ABL UK’s, energy technical director, was renominated as the director of SOMWS for the next three years.
The AGM was followed by the seminar which featured an insightful range of panel discussions on the theme “Forward, Stronger, Together” aiming to share knowledge and foster collaboration within the industry. ABL Group’s MD for energy services, Alex Harrison, participated in the 3rd panel, sharing his insights and expertise along with Underwriters, Brokers and energy clients on the topic of non-issuance of COA’s, its cause and impacts and the effects of NDA’s in MWS contracts.
The seminar was then followed by a drink’s reception and the annual dinner in which. The highlight of the evening was the prize giving, in which ABL’s Mike McLachlan, renewables MWS director for Europe, was awarded the prestigious Len Messenger Award.
Len Messenger was a stalwart of the Energy underwriting industry, a long-time member of the JRC (now JNRC – Joint natural resources committee), an avid supporter of the need for MWS for energy construction projects, and a major instigator in the formation of the Society. The Award in his name is an accolade afforded annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of Marine Warranty Surveying. Mike was chosen from a pool of six finalists originally voted for anonymously by the SOMWS membership, and finally selected a further anonymous voting stage by the SOMWS board, recognising his significant impact on the industry through his dedication and pioneering work in offshore renewable projects.
Mike has vast experience in marine warranty surveying and consulting with a specific expertise in high-voltage export and array cables, HVDC interconnector cable installation, and repairs for renewable energy projects. His leadership in integrating MWS rules and guidelines within projects has set new industry standards.
