Capt. Simon Healy, Country Manager | ABL Australia
What do you do at ABL?
I am responsible for managing and growing the ABL Australian business as well as undertaking a variety of marine consulting, ship management/operations/commercial and insurance related projects, combining my management and operational experience to good advantage.
What inspired you to go into the field you are in?
I grew up messing about in small boats in the waters of the Isle of Wight in the UK and then joined the local Lifeboat Crew while in my final school years – I think this strongly influenced and inspired me towards a career at sea and something I can thoroughly recommend.
This lead to becoming a Deck Officer and eventually progressing to Master on specialist offshore vessels. I was very fortunate to be involved with many different, challenging and fascinating projects while at sea, working with some extremely capable people at all levels. I then had an opportunity to move into vessel management, where I found myself running a fleet of vessels in several locations around the world, before joining ABL and growing our business in Australia.
I have always loved the ocean and have been very fortunate to be able to make a great career from it. If I was to give advice to someone entering the industry I would say, ‘have a sense of humour, persevere to achieve your goals, grasp opportunities when they come, treat people with respect and finally, don’t look back’.
What do you enjoy about working at ABL?
Working with committed and talented people, who share a common passion for finding solutions to challenging problems. No day is the same!
What is the most exciting aspect of the energy transition for you?
The energy transition allows us to apply existing knowledge in new ways, developing new technologies, with a strong impetus to making the world a better, cleaner place.
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
Spending quality time with my amazing wife Federica and our kids, BBQ’s with friends, playing guitar (badly) and occasionally messing about in boats!
