Meet Wei-Yang Tan, Port Infrastructure Team Lead, ABL Australia

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL . What keeps you on your toes?

“Right now, it’s a bit of a balancing act, finding new Ports and Harbours business opportunities around Australia while still supporting work back in London, where I was based before returning to Brisbane.”

What drew you to the maritime world and what keeps you passionate about it?

As a civil engineer, I specialised in Ports & Harbours, which naturally led me into the maritime world. The power of the seas continues to inspire me, it’s incredible how the oceans touch everyday lives globally. In so many ways, we are all connected by energy and oceans.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

Over the past few years, I’ve been involved in port infrastructure developments supporting offshore wind, electrification, alternative fuels, and carbon capture. I’m excited to now bring my experience from the UK and Europe to projects across Australia and the wider APAC region.

From an infrastructure perspective, I see renewables, sustainability, and the energy transition not just as trends or opportunities, but as evolutionary and transformative movements that will shape Ports and Harbours (and beyond) in Australia and across the APAC region.

Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team in Brisbane? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?

“At the moment, it’s humble beginnings just myself and Regional Director for Asset Integrity Management, Dave Heavey representing Ports & Harbours and Asset & Integrity Management services.

Even though we’ve only worked together for a short time, we’ve already weathered a tropical cyclone together!”

If you could change one thing about the maritime industry, what would it be and why?

I would like to see more focus on improving maritime infrastructure to support the growth and transformation needed for sustainable future developments.
