Meet Rob Johnson, Operations Manager, Asset Integrity Management, ABL North America
The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?
Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL. What keeps you on your toes?
“As Operations Manager for Asset Integrity Management in the US, my days are a mix of strategic oversight and hands-on problem-solving. I’m responsible for project delivery, supporting our consultants, and ensuring we’re consistently meeting and exceeding client expectations.
One moment I’m reviewing data from a recent facility inspection, and the next I’m collaborating with our global teams on resource planning or technical strategy. The variety keeps me sharp, but it’s the challenge of helping clients navigate complex integrity issues that really keeps me on my toes”

What drew you to our industry and what keeps you passionate about it?
I’ve always been driven by the opportunity to make a tangible impact, especially when it comes to safety and operational efficiency. What attracted me to the maintenance and reliability space was its potential to improve performance across multiple manufacturing and energy sectors.
I enjoy digging into the details, helping clients extend asset life, avoid failures, and build systems that work better over time. There’s a deep sense of purpose in knowing that our work helps keep people safe and businesses running smoothly.
Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?
Right now, I’m supporting a client as they build out their Mechanical Integrity Program for a brand-new facility. It’s an exciting opportunity to be involved from the ground up helping shape the programme’s structure, establish inspection protocols, and ensure compliance with industry regulations. It’s a great example of proactive asset management, and I’m proud to be part of setting them up for long-term success.
From your perspective in Asset Integrity Management, what emerging opportunities or technology do you see shaping the future of the energy and maritime sectors in the USA?
There’s a real shift happening as industries embrace digital transformation. Technologies like IT/OT convergence, AI, and Asset Learning are paving the way for smarter, more predictive maintenance strategies. We’re moving away from reactive fixes and towards intelligent systems that can learn from data and anticipate issues before they occur.
This has huge potential not just for reliability, but also for sustainability and safety particularly in the energy and maritime sectors, where the stakes are high.
Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team in Houston? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?
Our Houston team is a blend of expertise and camaraderie. We work hard, but we also know how to enjoy ourselves whether it’s in-office team lunches or offsite team-building events. It’s a supportive environment where everyone brings something different to the table. Those shared moments, both professional and personal, really strengthen our dynamic and make collaboration feel effortless.
If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?
If I could change one thing, it would be the level of attention given to what I call the “right to operate” – the concept that a robust and well-maintained Mechanical Integrity Program isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a necessity. These programmes are critical for protecting people, the environment, and the business itself. Elevating that conversation within organisations can help drive meaningful improvements in safety, reliability, and overall operational effectiveness.
Why should people visit our ABL Group stand at the Offshore Technology Conference?
The Offshore Technology Conference is a chance to connect with industry professionals from all corners of the sector and ABL Group brings a truly global perspective. We work across energy, maritime, and renewables, which means we can share not just best practices but also valuable ‘watch outs’ that come from deep experience across regions and industries.
Whether you’re looking to optimise asset performance, manage risk, or explore new technologies, there’s a lot we can offer and we’d love to talk.
