ABL November Maritime Market Briefing

Join us for ABL’s November Maritime Market Briefing, exploring the following topic:

Sustainable Ship Repairs: How Insurance Can Drive Sustainability

Introduction to the topic

Marine insurance does not simply fund the repair of damaged vessels; through claims scope, repair specifications, parts approval, and settlement practice, it influences repairs’ steel demand, component manufacturing, waste generation, transport, and yard energy use.

This presentation explores how H&M underwriters, claims handlers, brokers, and surveyors can make repair decisions that retain value, reduce environmental impact, and support better commercial outcomes.

The session explores what sustainable repairs could mean and the framework that is more suitable to define them. It examines practical sustainable repair practices, including repair over replacement, easy-to-repair equipment, certified remanufactured components, recycled-content materials, and green refits. The session also considers regional differences in yard maturity, and the data gaps that currently prevent the industry from measuring the full carbon and material footprint of marine repairs.

We will conclude with a practical action agenda for insurers and surveyors: how to assess sustainable repair options during claims, and ways to reward lower-impact, higher-value repairs. It positions the claim event as a strategic opportunity to reduce embodied carbon and waste while improving cost control, downtime, client service, and underwriting insight.

The technical presentation will be followed by a Q&A and finalised with a summary of last month’s high-cost marine casualties.
