Meet the team: Dame Diop | ABL

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

Dame Diop, Marine Surveyor, Senegal

What do you do at ABL?

As part of the MWS team, I conduct surveys, including document reviews and site attendance for approval of various oil and gas operations. This includes, but is not limited to, towage, loading/discharge and transportation of cargo items.

As one of two staff present now in Senegal, I help in establishing our new office and developing our business lines in Senegal and neighbouring countries. This involves prospecting and meeting clients and studying projects updates ect.

What inspired you to go into the field you are in?

In 2020, after ten years in the Navy, I decided to study two years of petroleum engineering and then join the oil and gas industry, as the first oil and the first gas barrels in the country were both expected in 2023. This was really a first, starting with the discovery of Sangomar and then Tortue fields, and I wanted to be part of it, especially as it echoed my interest in engineering.

When I graduated I had the opportunity to join ABL and it seemed like a unique chance to be in the maritime and energy fields at the same time, extending my interest in oil and gas to renewables. This gave me the opportunity to still work in the maritime sector, to which, after all those years at sea, I still love.

What excites you the most about our industry?

I would say three things; firstly, being challenged every day in terms of knowledge and skills. Things are ever changing, every case, every project, every job comes with its own particularities. The second, is a consequence of the first: the possibility to learn. The experience is truly enriching. Finally, the multidisciplinary nature of the work, not only do you have to draw on multi-sectoral resources and skills, but get the chance to work with experts in different sectors often with different backgrounds.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy playing sports, football or basketball, and reading novels. I like the classics.

At weekends I enjoy going to my parents’ house in Rufisque, 20 kilometres south-east of Dakar, and laugh when my mother asks if I missed her tasty food! Rufisque is often a time to meet up with childhood friends too.
