Meet the team: Silvia Strat | Longitude

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

Silvia Strat, Naval Architect and Design Engineer | Longitude Southampton

What do you do at Longitude?

I joined the team as a recent graduate in a junior naval architect and design engineer role and I am now part of the marine engineering team. I have been with Longitude for a bit more than a year but considering how fast this company grows I could bet it was more than that!

In the past year I’ve been encouraged to take a variety of tasks from structural engineering and design scopes to basic and detailed piping design in order to discover which is the path I would like to follow on this complex marine field.

What inspired you to go into the field you are in?

Growing up in a city where one of the main attractions is the Danube river I was always fascinated by the ginormous cargo ships I used to see in port. I am also into maths, science and I always enjoyed drawing so this career comprises all.

What do you enjoy about working at Longitude?

The remarkable thing about being part of ABL is that the field of engineering is so broad that you can end up working in many diverse areas like boats, yachts, passenger ships, cargo ships, offshore platforms, warships, and the list goes on.

I also enjoy the multicultural nature of the company and the fact that you get to meet people from all over the globe.

What is the most exciting aspect of the energy transition for you?

I don’t think there is an aspect that is not exciting about the energy transition era we live in. From an engineering point of view it’s such a challenging chapter and to know that we, as a team, are part of all this transition to low carbon energy and are able to make changes to ensure a greener environment, proves to myself I am in the right place.

What do you do in your spare time?

My job has an influence on this too, since accepting this role as part of the Southampton team meant also moving here. I therefore spend most of my spare time exploring the area and discovering new places. I also enjoy having a good cup of coffee in a nice place on a weekend morning while dreaming of travelling more often.
