About

Captain Tony Nichols is an experienced master mariner who sailed on oil tankers, container vessels, fast passenger ferries, buoy tenders, dredgers and harbour tugs before starting a career within the Ports and Harbour industry.

Initially, he gained pilotage experience at the Port of Rye in East Sussex. Tony joins ABL from the Bristol City Docks, where he was Harbour Master for nearly 15 years, where inter alia, he was responsible for operating infrastructure over 250 years old and maintaining dock water levels in an area with the second highest tidal ranges in the world. As harbour master, he was the designated Operations Executive Commander for Oil Spills and was responsible for Civil Contingency emergencies within local authorities.

Tony has knowledge of Ports and Harbour compliance, including the Port Marine Safety Code, Ports Good Governance Guidance,  Harbour Revision order applications, and other statutory port legislation and codes. Tony also has experience in navigational risk assessments, pilotage directions, port health checks, conservancy checks and licencing, and stakeholder management regarding all ports and harbour operations.

Tony has joined the ports & harbours team and will be based in Bristol.
