ABL June North America Maritime Breakfast Briefing

Join us for ABL’s North America Maritime Breakfast Briefing, exploring the following topic: Subsea Cable Claims.

ABL’s Senior Engineer, George Marling, will present our June briefing on ‘Subsea Cable Claims’.

Subsea cables account for over 80% of offshore wind insurance claims, highlighting their critical role in overall project risk. At the same time, maritime and P&I exposures are increasing, with third-party liabilities arising from anchor drag, fishing activity, and vessel operations frequently leading to cable damage claims.

Individual incidents can result in repair costs of up to $30M, along with $40M to $50M in associated revenue losses. As subsea power and telecoms networks continue to expand across US waters, understanding both installation risks and ongoing third-party interaction is becoming increasingly important.

This presentation will provide an overview of subsea cable installation, along with practical risk mitigation measures that can help limit claims, both during installation and from later third-party interactions.

With the rise of subsea transmission and telecoms cables in the US, ABL explore the early stage engineering, through to risk management and cable repair procedures so we can understand the extent of costs associated with cable-related failures.

The technical presentation will be followed by a Q&A and finalised with a summary of last month’s high-cost marine casualties. Marine casualties are for the in person attendees only.

When: Tuesday 23rd June, 9:30 AM EST

Where:

  • In-person: 22nd Floor Event Space, 100 Wall Street, New York. Arrivals from 9:30 AM for coffee, breakfast and networking.
  • Virtual: Zoom Webinar from 10:00 AM

Learning objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what the engineering design process for submarine cables is.
  • Look at the various threats to a cable, and why they can cause so much damage.
  • Highlight different ways to protect cables and what their limitations are.
  • Understand how cable repairs are undertaken, why they are so complicated (and expensive), and how this affects the project.
