Maritime Safety & Shipyard Risk in Southeast Asia: ABL Singapore’s 2025 Familiarisation Course

ABL is proud to announce the successful completion of our 2025 Singapore Marine Familiarisation Course, held on 8–9 July in collaboration with ST Engineering Marine – Gul Yard, Singapore’s next-generation smart shipyard.

This annual programme is a cornerstone of our commitment to advancing maritime safety, regulatory compliance, and technical excellence across the marine insurance, marine engineering, and shipping sectors in Southeast Asia. Tailored for underwriters, brokers, and P&I clubs, the two-day course combined expert-led presentations, hands-on shipyard exposure, and strategic networking.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Main engine and steering gear failures
  • Evolving risks in Hull & Machinery (H&M)
  • Loss prevention for Wind Turbine Installation Vessels (WTIVs)
  • Navigating Smart Risks in the Shipyards of the Future

Navigating New Risks in Smart Shipyards

A highlight of the course was the guided tour of ST Engineering Marine’s Gul Road Shipyard, where participants observed advanced ship repair and conversion projects, including dredgers and subsea support vessels.

This immersive experience showcased ABL’s deep expertise in the JH143 shipyard risk assessments, a critical component of marine assurance and shipyard compliance. With Singapore and Asia-Pacific shipyards playing a pivotal role in global shipbuilding and repair, understanding their risk profiles is essential for marine due diligence and loss prevention on a worldwide scale.

Winds of Change: Marine Warranty and Alternate Fuels

Day two featured sessions on:

  • Marine Warranty Survey (MWS) for project cargo
  • Hazards of jack-up vessels in offshore wind projects
  • The future of alternate fuels and maritime decarbonisation

These topics reflect ABL’s mission to support the energy transition in oceans – economically and environmentally – through marine engineering consulting and sustainability-driven risk management.

The programme concluded with a yacht tour of Singapore’s port and anchorage, the world’s busiest container trans-shipment hub. With over 300 vessels anchored at any time, this segment offered participants a rare view into the scale and complexity of maritime operations in the region.

First-Hand Insight into Singapore’s Maritime Hub

“ABL Singapore’s maritime familiarisation courses evolve year-on-year, but continue to be a vital medium to give the market 1st– hand exposure to the expanding risk profile amidst a changing market climate, while supporting a crucial interface between insurer and surveyor.  This is an invaluable way to drive maritime safety and compliance on a day-to-day basis, and I look forward to seeing what 2026’s course will bring.”

— Hemant Phul, P&I and Marine Casualty Service Manager, ABL Singapore

“I would like to thank all of you in the ABL team for such a well-organised programme filled with interesting insights and new connections.”
