Hidromod Appointed by Veolia to Deliver Advanced Modelling Study for Grândola Coastal Submarine Outfall

Waste, water, and energy services provider Veolia has commissioned Hidromod, part of ABL, to provide a numerical modelling study to characterise the dispersion of a saline plume discharged through a submarine outfall in the Grândola Coast area in Portugal.

The primary objective of the work was to quantify spatial and temporal salinity increments relative to the receiving environment.

The study combined detailed meteo-oceanographic analysis with advanced numerical modelling to estimate expected salinity increases resulting from outfall operation and to assess the potential risk of recirculation between the intake and discharge points.

The results supported both the environmental evaluation and the technical validation of the submarine outfall design, contributing to informed decision-making and sustainable operation of the system.

José Chambel Leitão

“This study reflects the value of combining meteo‑oceanographic analysis with high‑fidelity numerical modelling to support environmentally responsible coastal infrastructure,” said José Chambel Leitão, Managing Director of Hidromod.

“By providing clear insight into salinity behaviour and recirculation risks, our work helps ensure that system design and operations are both technically robust and environmentally sustainable.”
