ABL appointed as MWS for transport and installation of US-Canadian interconnector

Energy and marine consultancy ABL are providing marine warranty survey (MWS) services to Transmission Developers Inc. to support the marine transportation and installation (T&I) of the subsea cable segments of the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project.

The CHPE project is a significant milestone in the development of renewable energy infrastructure in North America. The project will transmit power from Canadian hydroelectric power plants to Queens, New York, through a 339-mile (approx. 545 kilometre) long HVDC cable. The project’s 1,250 MW capacity is estimated to account for approximately 20% of NYC’s electricity needs.

The submarine part of the HVDC cable is approximately 193 miles (310 kilometres) long, with the remaining 146 miles (245 kilometres) terrestrial. The submarine part of the interconnector is being installed within Lake Champlain, the Hudson River, and the Harlem River throughout 2024-2025.

Upon completion, it will be the longest fully buried transmission line in the United States to date.

ABL’s scope of work covers marine warranty services related to the transport and installation (T&I) for the subsea scope and the cable and critical component transportation from the fabrication place. The scope entails the technical review and approval of procedural documentation, drawings and calculations, suitability surveys of the proposed equipment, including witness of DP trials where required, and on-site attendance to review and approve all warranted marine operations.

ABL’s operation in the USA are leading the project, supported by the company’s offices in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Canada, Brazil, and South Korea.
