The team at AqualisBraemar LOC shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know AqualisBraemar LOC, but do you know our team?
Peter van der Kraan, Engineering Manager | ABL Canada
What do you do at AqualisBraemar LOC?
Since joining the company in 2013, I have been mainly active in the Marine Warranty side of the business.
The first few years were spent in the Perth office in Australia, where I learned the ropes as Marine Warranty surveyor on large energy projects, like Wheatstone, Gorgon and Inpex.
By early 2017, I transferred to the London office, where I took on the role of LOC’s Project Manager for the MWS scope on the TCO project.
About 1.5 years ago, I transferred to Canada, where I am currently Calgary-based and working in the role of Engineering Manager/ Project Manager.
What excites you the most about our industry?
I find it very interesting that due to the nature of our work, we get to interact with a large number of people & organisations, from oil majors and their contractors, to vessel operators and engineering firms, and of course colleagues from our intercompany offices.
Also, with the work ranging from 1-day attendances to projects that can run for a few years, there is a constant change in work environment & location, which I enjoy.
What made you join AqualisBraemar LOC?
Before joining LOC in 2013, I was working as Project Manager on a wreck removal operation for a Dutch marine salvage company in the Melaka Straits in Malaysia. LOC was engaged on that project as the Technical Consultant of our Client.
Towards the end of the wreck removal operations, I had a chat with Jon Walker from LOC’s Singapore office, who advised that LOC was looking for technical staff in their Perth office. He brought me in touch with Alex Harrison, who brought me in his Perth team.
I am still grateful to this day that Jon and Alex gave me the opportunity to start with LOC! Especially since my area of study – Mechanical Engineering, and work experience up to that point, had differed from that of most of other technical staff in the company (mainly Naval Architects or Mariners).
What do you do when you are not working?
Though I do have to travel a fair bit for work; I love travelling outside of work too.
I am also a fairly outdoorsy person and love to be active. So with the Rocky Mountains now at our doorstep, I love to go out hiking, mountain biking, back-country camping, climbing, and am looking forward to get into winter sports.
