George C. Panagakis, Country Manager & Naval Architect | ABL Greece
What do you do at ABL?
Managing the local ABL office (ex Braemar) with a primary target to expand the business to include as many as possible of the wide range of business lines ABL is now offering.
Such an expansion will also increase the number of our local staff surveyors and consultants, and positions us at the cutting-edge of today’s technologies and in the spotlight of innovation!
In addition, I am also involved in various projects as Project Manager and/or surveyor, in cooperation with other ABL offices covering all sectors: renewables, maritime and oil & gas.
What inspired you to go into the field you are in?
Sea has always given me the feeling of freedom, variety of destinations, decision making and above all the respect of the unknown.
University taught me the basic rules of adapting to real-life situations, which were critical as a junior superintendent in shipping companies. The transition to consultancy (originally with Noble Denton) introduced me to Maritime and Oil & Gas projects opening new horizons to my career.
Joining ABL was a natural continuation of my career, giving me access to new industry sectors, Renewables, in which I can combine my experience from working in multi-cultural environments, my respect to teamwork and my managerial skills.
What do you enjoy about working at ABL?
The challenge to expand the local office, the ample room to expand and create, the variety of business lines, meeting people and colleagues, the wide experience ABL can offer throughout our worldwide network of experts, making possible almost every task/challenge that comes to our doorstep!
What is the most exciting aspect of the energy transition for you
Energy transition denotes the opening of a new horizon where professionals may find new ways to expand their capabilities and ambitions, to establish new, improved ways of working having learned from the mistakes or the not-so successful results of the past and the chance to explore “uncharted waters”. It is the chance to “move forward”!
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
Enjoying the sea-view from the summer house on the island, listening to jazz/sax music. Engaged in long conversations with young professionals about the future accomplishments and challenges and enjoying meals with friends and family.
Meet George and the wider ABL Greece team at next week’s Posidonia 2022, Athens, 6-10th June.
