Meet the Intern: Steven Katz, ABL Americas

Name: Steven Katz

Course: Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture

University: Web Institute

Hometown/City: Croton-on-Hudson, New York

What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the energy/maritime industry?

“I have always known I wanted to be an engineer, though I wasn’t sure what kind at first. When I discovered marine engineering and naval architecture, I knew it was the right path for me. I found the marine industry, particularly the commercial sector, to be especially interesting.”

How do you see yourself contributing to the future of sustainable energy and ocean resources as your career progresses?

While I am not yet certain where I will be working after graduation, I aim to design with sustainability in mind, ensuring that any project I contribute to has a lower environmental impact.

Can you tell us about a project or task you found exciting during your internship, and why it stood out to you?

The Champlain Hudson Power Express project was particularly exciting to work on. Its goal is to provide New York with hydroelectric power generated in Canada via large subsea cables. I found it especially interesting as it is a sustainable power project with a significant impact on a region close to where I live

Can you tell us about something new learned during your internship?

I developed my communication skills while working within a large company, collaborating with multiple groups and managing moving pieces that all had to coordinate for project success.

I also gained valuable insight into the marine insurance business and marine warranty areas I previously knew little about. I now have a solid understanding of their basic principles.

Has your experience with ABL Group helped shape or refine your long-term career goals? If so, how?

My time at ABL Group gave me a clearer understanding of the work environment in a consulting engineering firm.

What specific skills or knowledge do you want to develop further as you move forward in your career?

I would like to expand my knowledge of the engineering and design process involved in ship design and repairs. Outside of work, I hope to improve as a musician and challenge myself with more complex songs.

What do you enjoy most about working as part of the ABL Group team in New York?

I really enjoyed working with the New York team. Everyone was welcoming and supportive whenever I needed help with assignments. The team seems like a close-knit group, and I hope they get their dartboard fixed soon…😆

Can you share a fun or memorable moment from your internship so far?

“I particularly enjoyed the on-site work opportunities gained through this internship.

I was able to see many vessels in person and observe how surveys are carried out gave me valuable hands-on experience in the field”

Looking ahead, where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I see myself in a stable role as a marine engineer or naval architect.

At ABL Group, we’re committed to developing the next generation of energy and maritime professionals. Through initiatives like the NYSERDA Clean Energy Internship Program, we offer students and graduates hands-on experience, mentorship, and the chance to contribute to real-world projects that support our work in energy and oceans.

Our US offices have hosted interns in both winter and summer seasons, helping them explore career paths, grow their skills, and build valuable industry connections. Steven’s journey is one example of how our programme empowers emerging talent to take confident steps towards their future careers.
