Meet Steve Mason, Regional Dynamic Positioning and Marine Assurance Manager, ABL Americas
The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?
Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL so far. What keeps you on your toes?
On a day-to-day basis, I support clients with Dynamic Positioning and Marine Assurance needs across the Americas.
My work ranges from reviewing DP trials and conducting audits to collaborating closely with regional teams. The dynamic nature of the role keeps me engaged and constantly learning.

What drew you to our industry and what keeps you passionate about it?
I started my career as a mariner, and my interest in dynamic positioning and offshore operations led me to pursue a deeper technical understanding of the systems and standards that drive safe and efficient operations. That curiosity continues to motivate me in my work today.
Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?
We’re gearing up for the MTS DP Conference, which is always an exciting opportunity to connect with industry peers and share insights. Our stand at booth 1 will highlight ABL’s expertise in Dynamic Positioning and marine assurance, giving attendees a chance to meet the team, explore our services, and discuss how we can support their operations.
With your expertise in DP and marine assurance, what do you see as the most common challenges vessels face during DP operations in the Americas, and how do you work with clients to address them?
Some of the most common challenges vessels face during DP operations in the Americas include ensuring compliance with industry standards and adapting to regional requirements. We work closely with clients to mitigate these risks by providing tailored assurance services, operational guidance, and practical support throughout their DP operations.
Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL team in Houston? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?
The camaraderie and collaborative spirit in the Houston office is fantastic. Whether it’s team outings or celebrating milestones together in the office, there’s always a positive, engaging atmosphere that makes it a great place to work.
If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?
If I could change one thing about the industry, it would be to see regulations more closely aligned with current organisational guidance. This alignment would improve safety and reduce operational risk by providing clearer expectations and more consistent practices across regions.
Steve and the ABL Americas team will be at this year’s DP Conference on 14–15 October! Join our local DP experts in Houston to learn how ABL’s multi-disciplinary team of engineering and operational specialists supports Dynamic Positioning systems across technical, assurance, and project management scopes – both in the region and beyond.
