ABL Sets Sail with its Inaugural Vessel Operations Course
We are happy to announce the successful completion of ABL’s inaugural Vessel Operations Course – part of our global maritime familiarisation course programme to support industry stakeholders. This three-day event aimed to provide participants from the world of hull & machinery (H&M), P&I and maritime law, with a unique insight into the operations of a working merchant vessel.
The course took place on the DFDS cruise ferry KING SEAWAYS, a 31,788 GT vessel with a capacity of 2,280 passengers. It departed Newcastle on the 11th of June, travelling to Amsterdam and returning back to Newcastle on the 13th of June.
“This was a brilliant course. It was very informative and I also met lots of great new people.”

About ABL’s Vessel Operations Course
Over the course of the programme, 12 delegates from across maritime insurance and law firms, had a chance to observe the cruise ferry arrival and departure procedures, experiencing the bridge and engine room. Delegates heard from the chief officer about deck and navigational operations and from the engineers on maintenance and engine room operations. Additionally, the participants toured the operational areas of the vessels and participated in classroom style technical lectures delivered by ABL’s maritime consultants, Paul Martin and Paul Johnston.
“Great course, ideal number of attendees allowing for good interaction. Knowledgeable, friendly and professional course leaders.”

About ABL’s Maritime Familiarisation Courses
ABL’s global maritime teams host a series of educational maritime familiarision courses annually, to give clients from the marine insurance industry and law firms, a closer look at some of the assets they are working with, and to gain a more detailed understanding of some of the risks that may be encountered. We host maritime familiarisation courses in all ABL key maritime hubs – UK, USA, UAE and Singapore – in collaboration with local shipyards.
“I am really pleased to see this most recent evolution of our popular maritime familiarisation programme, which we host to support our clients in their work, annually. These courses continue to prove themselves key in building on the reputation to seek the truth that we are well-known for in our maritime markets.”
Mark McGurran, Global Managing Director, Maritime
We would like to thank all the participants of the course and the instructors both from ABL and DFDS for their enthusiastic involvement, contributing massively to making this course a success.
