Iga Ratajczak, Intern for Energy Transition | ABL London
What do you do at ABL?
I have just finished my first year studying Engineering at the University of Cambridge and I am currently working as an intern in energy transition at ABL. It is a two months long summer placement during which I have assisted on projects related to the use of alternative fuels such as hydrogen, methanol and ammonia instead of fossil fuels, and projects focusing on the use of engines, fuel-cell technologies and batteries in the marine sector. I have also worked on projects related to renewable power plants, with particular focus on force analysis and the design of floating solar panels.
What inspired you to go into the field you are in?
Considering the climate crisis, the job of an engineer in the 21st century is to make sure that new technologies are designed to be as sustainable as possible. The faster we learn about the use of solar panels, alternative fuels and batteries throughout different sectors, the closer we are to achieving the net zero emissions goals.
What do you enjoy about working at ABL?
During my time at ABL my projects have been challenging and I have learnt a great deal. The team has great expertise and they are always happy to help. I have enjoyed collaborating with different people and companies from all around the world.
What is the most exciting aspect of the energy transition for you?
The industry is moving fast, with many exciting projects in the marine, aeronautical and energy sector arising in the near future. Learning about these technologies and being a part of the change is extremely rewarding.
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy travelling and hiking. I like to explore new places and learn about different cultures and their architecture. I also enjoy cooking vegan meals and trying new food.
Outside of my hobbies, spending time with my friends makes me the happiest. I am also an active member of the Cambridge University Spaceflight Society as a Lead Recovery Engineer.
