AqualisBraemar supports impressive WWII restoration project
AqualisBraemar was recently engaged by National Museum Royal Navy to act as marine warranty supervisor for the trailered loadout of the tank carrying landing craft (LCT) from ShipHall B inside Portsmouth Naval Dockyard to the D-Day Museum in Southsea, UK, where the LCT will be exhibited to the public.
The vessel is the last surviving D-Day tank landing craft, which has now been restored in a £4.7million project. The vessel carried tanks and military supplies on to the French beaches at Normandy as part of the Allied invasion force of June 6, 1944.
Weighing in at 217 tonnes, the 57.5 metre long LCT was transferred using two SPMT 6 axle 48-wheel low loader trailers onto the flat-topped cargo barge Wilcarry 1711 within the lock area adjacent to Ship Hall B in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
From there the barge was towed to a specially made touch-down area on Southsea beach. The barge was positioned at HW springs during the early hours on the morning after a failed attempt the previous night due to adverse weather conditions. The LCT was then successfully offloaded and later positioned within the specially made display location.
AqualisBraemar’s office in Aberdeen, UK, was contracted and the company’s expert attendees were CEO David Wells and group marine director Rodger Dickson.
“While vessel transport is highly common to us, this is certainly one of the most historic vessels we have been involved with. The restoration project is a fitting tribute to all those who served and lost their lives on both sides on the D-Day landings, and we are proud to have been able to provide our support to the project,” says David Wells, CEO of AqualisBraemar.
