Risk-Based Inspection for DP3-Classed Offshore Floating Accommodation Unit
Client: Major Integrated Offshore Energy Services Company
Assets: DP3-classed Offshore Floating Accommodation Unit
Duration: 3 months
Location: Offshore Brazil
Software: IBM Maximo (CMMS Integration)
ABL Credibility: Led by API 580 Certified Engineer
Project introduction:
To ensure the integrity and reliability of critical static systems aboard the DP3-classed offshore floating accommodation unit, a major integrated offshore energy services company commissioned ABL to conduct a comprehensive Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) study.
The project aimed to prioritise inspection efforts based on risk exposure, aligned with API 580/581 methodologies, and to support long-term asset integrity planning
As part of the RBI project, ABL delivered a full-cycle review covering system definition, damage mechanism evaluation, risk assessment, field validation, inspection planning, and CMMS integration. This included identifying static mechanical systems (cooling water and compressed air), assessing thinning, cracking, and external corrosion risks, applying a qualitative risk matrix (PoF and CoF), conducting onboard inspections, developing risk based inspection recommendations and formatting them for seamless upload into IBM Maximo.

Challenges
The DP3-classed offshore floating accommodation unit operates in a high-demand offshore environment. The client required a structured RBI approach to:
- Identify degradation mechanisms in cooling water and compressed air systems.
- Prioritise inspection activities based on risk.
- Validate assumptions through field verification.
- Integrate inspection recommendations into the CMMS
(IBM Maximo)
Results and Benefits
- Risk Transparency: Clear identification of high-risk components and systems.
- Inspection Optimisation: Focused inspection plans targeting critical areas, reducing unnecessary inspections.
- Operational Assurance: Confidence in system integrity through validated assumptions and conservative modeling.
- CMMS Enhancement: Integration of inspection routines and NR-13 compliance into IBM Maximo
“The RBI study provided by ABL has significantly improved our understanding of system risks and allowed us to focus our inspection efforts where they matter most. The integration into Maximo was seamless and added real value to our integrity program.”
