Meet Peter Adam, Group Managing Director – AIM, ABL Aberdeen

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL. What keeps you on your toes?

“A big part of my day-to-day is focused on understanding client needs and ensuring we deliver the best value through continuous improvement and innovation. I spend a lot of time working closely with our development and support teams to make sure we retain our clients by consistently exceeding expectations.

It’s all about creating a software experience that delivers real, measurable value. Another key part of my role is building long-lasting relationships where we’re seen as trusted advisors who help our clients gain a significant return on investment. And of course, networking keeps things dynamic and opens up new opportunities.”

What drew you to our industry and what keeps you passionate about it?

What really drew me in was the ability to see visible results for our clients. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that what we do helps improve the safety of work for others – helping them get home safe every day. I’m also passionate about supporting and developing our team members to reach their best potential, and I find great purpose in building strong partnerships that stand the test of time.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

I’m particularly excited about the work we’re doing with new industries such as Defence, where we’re bringing technical excellence and digital solutions to the table.

Right now, we’re focused on increasing productivity and safety through digital solutions, and onboarding new clients across Energy, Defence, and Mining onto our software platforms.

Where do you see the biggest opportunities for transformation in asset integrity management over the next five years?

There are a lot of exciting areas for transformation. One is blockchain for traceability-ensuring secure, tamper-proof records of asset history and compliance actions, which can really strengthen a robust management of change process. We’re also exploring AI for detection of change and failure. In fact, we’ve developed a computer vision model in collaboration with the University of Salford, which is detailed in our recent paper here.

We’re also using genetic algorithms to automatically level-load work activity within our Effio software. Other exciting areas include automated workflows, large language models and data lakes for developing equipment strategies and mining equipment data. In the longer term, we’re looking at how the future power of quantum computing could play a role. Ultimately, I believe tying asset integrity management to business performance management is key to achieving upper quartile performance across the asset lifecycle.

Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?

For me, it’s being part of an amazing team of people! some of whom I’ve worked with for more than a decade. It’s been a privilege to watch our team grow and develop over the years, seeing apprentices and graduates become leaders and innovators. That sense of shared journey and development is something really special.

If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?

If I could change one thing, it would be to make the industry more proactive and less reactive. Too often we see safety incidents, failed or delayed asset new builds, or asset costs spiralling in late life – all of which are preventable with a best practice, proactive approach. Not only would this save lives, it would also save millions of dollars. I’d also like to see fewer short-term, knee-jerk reactions that impact strategy and delivery. The industry can be slow to change and adapt, and that’s something we need to address if we want to progress.

Why should people visit our stand at ADIPEC this year?

There are lots of great reasons to stop by the ABL Group stand. It’s a chance to gain insights on how to maximise your business performance while protecting your people and investments. We’ll also be sharing how you can gain real competitive advantage through practical digital solutions. Most of all, it’s a great opportunity to meet some of the wonderful people at ABL and to share insights into the opportunities and challenges facing the industry today.
