Meet Andy Bell, Senior Technical Consultant – AIM, ABL Canada
The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?
Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL. What keeps you on your toes?
“As a Senior Technical Consultant, no two days are ever quite the same – sometimes not even two hours! Over the past three and a half years, I’ve been seconded to Cenovus Energy in Calgary, where I’ve supported a wide variety of projects ranging from hierarchy builds and master data optimisation to field walkdowns and Bill of Materials creation.
More recently, I’ve been working closely with our Business Development team, helping out with technical input for leads and proposals. But as I’m writing this, I’m actually in British Columbia, about to board a cargo vessel for my first inspection with ABL Marine – an exciting new chapter in my journey here!

One of the biggest challenges is simply time – there’s so much going on, and ABL’s flexibility means you get to be involved in a wide range of work across the business. I’d love to do it all, but there are only so many hours in the day!”
What drew you to our industry and what keeps you passionate about it?
Energy powers the world! it’s one of the most vital, fast-moving, and dynamic industries out there. What drew me in was the scale and impact of the work; what’s kept me here is the constant evolution. There’s always something new to learn, whether it’s a breakthrough technology, an innovative approach, or a fresh challenge to tackle. That constant momentum is what keeps me engaged and passionate about what I do.
Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?
Right now, I’m in British Columbia preparing to board a vessel for an inspection. It’s my first time doing this kind of fieldwork, so I’m really excited about getting hands-on experience and the opportunity to expand my skill set

Where do you see the biggest opportunities for transformation in asset integrity management over the next five years?
Technology is set to be a real game-changer. We’re only just beginning to tap into the potential of AI in this field, but over the next few years, I believe it will play a central role in driving smarter, more efficient asset integrity management.
Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team in Calgary? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?
Our Calgary team might be small, but we’re incredibly driven. The close-knit dynamic means everyone gets the chance to contribute meaningfully and wear different hats. It’s a really collaborative space where ideas flow freely and that makes coming to work enjoyable.
If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?

“The energy industry can be quite volatile and unpredictable.
If I could change one thing, it would be to bring more stability to the sector. That kind of consistency would benefit everyone involved.”
Why should people attend ABL AIM’s upcoming webinar: Is Your Data Doing Its Job? Is Your Data Capable? Unlocking the Full Potential of your CMMS and Preparing for an AI-Driven Future?
