Meet Jia Xin Tan , Marine Surveyor, ABL Singapore

The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

In celebration of International Women in Engineering Day 2025 (INWED), we are spotlighting Jia Xin Tan, Marine Surveyor at ABL Singapore:

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL. What keeps you on your toes?

“I support the team with both technical and administrative tasks, which keeps things varied and engaging. One of the parts I enjoy most is getting the chance to go onboard different vessels every visit brings a new learning experience.

It’s exciting to be part of a team that’s so hands-on and involved in the field.”

What drew you to our industry and what keeps you passionate about it?

My interest in the marine industry started during my diploma in Marine and Offshore Technology and grew stronger through my degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. What keeps me passionate is how dynamic and complex the industry is, there’s always something new to learn, and it constantly challenges me to grow both technically and professionally.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

While I’m not currently involved in one standout project, I really value the variety of tasks I support each day, they all contribute to my learning and keep me engaged as part of the team. I’m also undergoing training with guidance from my manager, Tim, which has been a great opportunity for personal and professional development.

What do you think the future of energy and oceans looks like in Singapore and the wider APAC Region?

The future looks promising, with growing focus on green energy, offshore renewables, and sustainable practices in the maritime industry. It’s an exciting time for the region, and Singapore is well-positioned to play a leading role in driving this positive change.

Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the ABL Group team in Singapore? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?

Definitely the supportive team culture. Everyone is generous with their knowledge and always willing to offer guidance, which creates such a positive environment. It makes learning on the job really enjoyable and helps you grow with confidence.

If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?

I’d like to shift the way women are perceived in the marine industry. There are still stereotypes to challenge and more progress needed in creating inclusive opportunities. I hope to be part of that change by continuing to grow, learn, and represent the value and capabilities women bring to this field.

As part of #INWED25 What more do you think we can do to encourage more women and girls to join the industry so we can collaborate, support one another, and truly ‘engineer together’?

We can start by raising more awareness about the opportunities in this industry and providing mentorship for women and girls, helping to create a more inclusive and safer environment where they feel welcomed and supported.
