Principal Geotechnical Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to lead the geotechnical design consultancy team of the Longitude geosciences department, and the consultancy arm of the ABL Group.

What you will be doing?

As our Principal Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on engineering and consultancy assignments for offshore wind farms and oil and gas projects on a global basis. You will also be leading teams to deliver complex geotechnical engineering projects:

  • Conceptual foundation design.
  • Detailed foundation design.
  • Detailed analyses for offshore design projects, subsea cable engineering experience is advantageous, and
  • R&D projects to position the company at the technical edge.

You will :

  • Lead projects (as assigned by the Engineering Manager) to accomplish the overall delivery of optimum solutions to clients within the timeframe, costs, and quality standards established.
  • Develop technical spreadsheets and tools based upon industry design codes and standards.
  • Liaise and work with the other geoscience departments or disciplines of ABL Group.

The role is ideally based in Newcastle; but other UK locations (London, Southampton, or Exeter) may be considered for the right candidate. The incumbent will have the right to work and reside in the United Kingdom.

This role is offered on a hybrid working mode. But flexibility and willingness to travel, as well as readiness for onshore/offshore assignments at short notice locally and globally for periods, would be required as agreed with your manager.

What we are looking for.

We are looking for a driven and solution-oriented professional with sound technical skills and good decision-making capability. The successful candidate will have good communication and interpersonal skills, strong leadership ability, and be able to deal effectively with multiple issues and assignments simultaneously. In addition, you will have:

  • A strong Civil Engineering academic background with relevance to geoscience (ideally MSc or equivalent),
  • Chartered member of a relevant professional institutional body.
  • Proven 10 years of experience as a geotechnical engineer in a fast-moving engineering consultancy environment.
  • Experience in advanced geotechnical analysis and the delivery of geotechnical solutions.
  • Knowledge of the design of foundation types for fixed and floating offshore wind.
  • Knowledge of cable engineering would be beneficial.
  • Good commercial track record in negotiating and running successful jobs.
  • Experience in preparing scopes of work for engineering design, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and practices and the ability to select and apply standard guides, methods, and techniques.
  • Experience in the following software is desirable only: GIS, Visual Basic and Matlab, gINT, SlopeW, GRL WEAP, Opile, Allpile or Lpile, Oasys Alp, and Finite Element Analysis.
