Geotechnical Engineer

Job overview

The Geotechnical Engineer will work as part of a team, primarily carrying out site-specific assessments for jack-up vessels.  

Key responsibilities and duties

  • Prepare geotechnical analysis and study to assess site condition for offshore unit installations
  • Analyse geotechnical findings, perform appropriate calculations and prepare reports for site-specific leg penetration analysis
  • Prepare and assist with review, analysis and interpretation of geotechnical data
  • Assist with report writing and writing Technical Notes
  • Undertake geotechnical analytical work, create and maintain spreadsheets, in-house developed tools, and databases
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, both within the host office location, the global OWC team and the wider ABL geoscience team, to assist in the design and evaluation of offshore structures and foundations, particularly of geotechnical aspects
  • Attend regular internal meetings and external/third-party meetings as required
  • Work on or lead projects to accomplish the overall delivery of optimum solutions to clients within the required timeframe, cost and quality standard
  • Prepare and assist with project bidding and proposal drafting
  • Ensure all deliverables are completed in full compliance with approved instructions, procedures and policies
  • Other duties as assigned

Specific Requirements

  • The role is office based, but some travel may be involved

Qualifications

Essential

  • BEng, MEng or MSc in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering

Desirable

  • Strong academic background on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
  • Dissertation on a Geotechnical Engineering subject is an advantage

Work experience

Essential

  • At least two years of relevant experience with at least one year’s experience as a geotechnical engineer in the design and management of offshore foundations or jack-up vessels

Desirable

  • Direct experience of working as a geotechnical engineer offshore on vessels or jack-ups
  • Experience of carrying out leg penetration assessments

Technical skills, knowledge and abilities

Essential

  • Excellent technical engineering knowledge with a specialisation in geotechnical engineering
  • Ability to co-ordinate, direct and lead projects and work under own initiative with minimum supervision
  • Ability to undertake pile drive-ability & jack-up leg penetration analyses

Desirable

  • Proficient in the use of software: Matlab, Visual Basic, Plaxis, GRLWEAP and gINT and general programming is an advantage

  • Attention to detail and high level of numerical accuracy and the ability to prioritise work

  • Analytical ability with attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team including engineers, contract managers and QHSE personnel
