Whilst this may spell a raft of technical challenges and opportunities, we must not ignore the significant marine implications of our fast-developing industry. Navigating the marine blueprint of an offshore wind project early on, is not only key to advanced risk mitigation, but also has a direct impact on the bottom line and operational productivity of a future project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So what do we mean by marine implications?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_21429735-1024x680.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44316\" width=\"383\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_21429735-1024x680.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_21429735-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_21429735-768x510.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_21429735-1536x1020.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_21429735-2048x1360.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_21429735-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_21429735-390x260.jpeg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Offshore transportation and installation (T&amp;I) operations are set to grow by 6 times by 2031, from what is already a stretched industry. EPCI and other contractors with the relevant experience are in demand, as are experienced marine personnel and crews, with understanding of the procedures, environments in which they work and other aspects of marine construction and operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An increasingly saturated T&amp;I landscape however, goes beyond resourcing challenges. It has implications on the availability of relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/maritime\/ports-and-harbours-engineering-consultants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">port and harbour infrastructure<\/a>, availability of a suitable fleet \u2013 construction vessels, support vessels, crew vessels etc. These challenges become more acute depending on the geography, for instance in the USA where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oedigital.com\/news\/502085-jones-act-uncertainties-persist-in-us-offshore-wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jones Act <\/a>places further restrictions on fleet suitability in offshore wind development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also considerations around risk of busy marine environments, <a href=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/all-media\/news\/loc-launches-probabilistic-navigational-risk-assessments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mitigating risk early on of delays to or from navigational routes<\/a>, or of damage to infrastructure caused by shipping routes or other local construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As more countries seek to reap the benefits of higher wind resource further offshore, <a href=\"https:\/\/owcltd.com\/floating-offshore-wind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">floating wind technology<\/a> as well as T&amp;I in deeper waters, provide unique challenges from a marine perspective, requiring different facilities and different skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The above are just a few of the marine challenges faced across the development cycle of an offshore wind farm. Is it all bad news? No of course not! There are rumblings of a shipbuilding boom coming up.
