{"id":33522,"date":"2022-09-29T12:18:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T11:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/?p=33522"},"modified":"2022-09-28T12:42:51","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T11:42:51","slug":"uk-goverments-growth-plan-to-bring-pipeline-accelerations-for-owfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/all-media\/blog\/uk-goverments-growth-plan-to-bring-pipeline-accelerations-for-owfs\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Goverment&#8217;s Growth Plan to Bring Pipeline Accelerations for OWFs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ABL Group&#8217;s renewables managing director John MacAskill spoke to Riviera this week about the announced plans from Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng to increase the speed with which the UK&#8217;s offshore wind projects are being developed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacAskill stated that the UK planning system for offshore wind needs improving if the government is to deliver on its target of 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/John-McAskill-2022.jpg\" alt=\"John McAskill\" class=\"wp-image-23937\" width=\"195\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/John-McAskill-2022.jpg 600w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/John-McAskill-2022-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/John-McAskill-2022-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><figcaption>John Macaskill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Speaking on fracking and modular nuclear reactors, MacAskill called these measures dead ends. What the UK actually needs to do, he suggested, is \u201caccelerate and increase the diameter of the planning system \u2018pipe\u2019 for offshore wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith circa 20 GW of the 50 GW not yet consented, for there to be a chance these projects are operating by 2030, they will need consent by the middle of the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDefinitive action to reduce the burden of environmental assessments \u2013 without abandoning the ecological duty of care \u2013 is vital, as is the ability to make changes to a DCO to reflect the evolution of technology in what is a fast-moving sector. I would worry about ripping up or \u2018reforming\u2019 habitats and species regulations. Achieving net zero should not come with an ecological cost, not if we can help it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacAskill said he hopes the government understands it also needs to increase budgets at the agencies that handle the planning and environmental processes. \u201cStreamlining alone won\u2019t solve this, additional resources are needed,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope there is real follow through from the Plan. The government could have stormy water to navigate in the next 12 months and I would hate to see the changes proposed in the Growth Plan slip down its list of priorities.
