{"id":20821,"date":"2021-09-15T14:33:25","date_gmt":"2021-09-15T13:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/?p=20821"},"modified":"2021-09-15T14:33:27","modified_gmt":"2021-09-15T13:33:27","slug":"abl-to-develop-green-hydrogen-production-barge-concept-for-harbour-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/all-media\/news\/abl-to-develop-green-hydrogen-production-barge-concept-for-harbour-use\/","title":{"rendered":"ABL to develop green hydrogen production barge concept for Harbour use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>AqualisBraemar LOC Group (ABL Group) has been awarded an innovative research and development (R&amp;D) project to develop a green hydrogen production barge under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/worlds-first-green-submarine-among-winners-of-the-uks-biggest-clean-maritime-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/apply-for-innovation-funding.service.gov.uk\/competition\/888\/overview?_ga=2.164256191.1495007074.1631699874-750501211.1627295520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CMDC<\/a> is funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABL Group<\/a>, including group company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longitude-engineering.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Longitude Engineering<\/a>, will work in a consortium with <a href=\"https:\/\/greenh2s.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Hydrogen Solutions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Poole Harbour Commissioners<\/a> on the concept development and feasibility study for a moored barge to generate, store and provide hydrogen to vessels bunkering at the same port.\u00a0 The port will store hydrogen produced via electrolysis using onshore renewables. Poole harbour will be used as a case study for demonstrating the environmental and commercial viability of the concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are really excited to embark on this innovative project. The maritime industry contributes to three percent of all greenhouse gas emissions and is a hard to abate sector. Technical demonstration of CO2-free powering of ships, when combined with scale, will blaze a trail for the net zero future,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/people\/r-v-ahilan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr RV Ahilan<\/a>, chief energy transition officer at ABL Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work will make a techno-economic analysis of the feasibility of green hydrogen as an alternative fuel to power ships, as well as establishing the commercial viability for such an application and its potential for expansion to other ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project is aimed at providing rapid infrastructure for hydrogen production at the point of requirement. Providing ready availability of hydrogen will support its adoption as a viable alternative marine fuel and contribute to the reduction of the sectors\u2019 emissions,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longitude-engineering.com\/our-people\/dean-goves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dean Goves<\/a>, Longitude Engineering\u2019s managing director for marine vessel design, defence and small craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Announced in March 2020, and part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/the-ten-point-plan-for-a-green-industrial-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Prime Minister\u2019s Ten Point Plan<\/a> to position the UK at the forefront of green shipbuilding and maritime technology, the CMDC is a \u00a320m investment from government alongside a further c.\u00a310m from industry to reduce emissions from the maritime sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme is supporting 55 projects across the UK, including projects in Scotland, Northern Ireland and from the South West to the North East of England, including ABL Group\u2019s project<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As set out in the Clean Maritime Plan (2019), Government funding has been used to support early stage research relating to clean maritime. The programme will be used to support the research, design and development of zero emission technology and infrastructure solutions for maritime and to accelerate decarbonisation in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This award follows the appointment of ABL operations in Aberdeen, Scotland this year to a project with Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd. (CMAL) to design and <a href=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/all-media\/news\/aqualisbraemar-loc-joins-hydrogen-fuel-cell-vessel-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emission-free fuel-cell sea-going passenger and car ferry.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/worlds-first-green-submarine-among-winners-of-the-uks-biggest-clean-maritime-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CMDC winning projects announcement from UK Department of Transport. <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AqualisBraemar LOC Group (ABL Group) has been awarded an innovative research and development (R&amp;D) project to develop a green hydrogen production barge under the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC).
