This April, ABL proudly marks 170 years of The Salvage Association<\/a> \u2014 the oldest part of the company and the foundation on which ABL\u2019s global maritime surveying and consultancy<\/a> business is built.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The milestone comes at a fitting moment, as ABL\u2019s global maritime leadership recently gathered in London to discuss strategy, collaboration, and the continued evolution of its consultancy services to support maritime clients worldwide, against a backdrop of changing market conditions, emerging risks, and increasing complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where it all began: The Salvage Association<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1856<\/strong>, The Salvage Association was the world\u2019s first non\u2011profit specialist marine surveying organisation<\/strong>, incorporated by Royal Charter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the London marine insurance market, it introduced independence, technical rigour, and a truth\u2011seeking discipline to casualty investigation and hull & machinery (H&M) damage surveying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its motto \u2014 Quaerite Vera<\/em> (Seek the Truth)<\/strong> \u2014 has endured for 170 years and remains embedded in ABL\u2019s purpose<\/a> today. The Salvage Association helped shape global standards in marine surveying and casualty management, establishing practices that underpin much of the modern maritime risk and claims environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Salvage Association was the cornerstone of marine surveying and casualty investigation. Its independent and non-profit status meant our work was grounded in applying expert knowledge to seek the truth and ultimately support all stakeholders in keeping the industry moving. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, ABL remains custodian of The Salvage Association\u2019s historical records \u2014 the Red Books<\/strong>, housed in ABL\u2019s London office. These meticulously document every maritime casualty the Association was instructed on, cataloguing over a century of global incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the entries is the RMS Titanic<\/strong>. While The Salvage Association\u2019s involvement was limited, it was instructed at the time by Willis – a relationship that continues today through ABL across both maritime and energy markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ABL\u2019s living connection to this legacy also includes team members who began their careers with The Salvage Association, including Caren Pang<\/strong>, part of ABL\u2019s maritime team in Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Salvage to Global Consultancy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Today, The Salvage Association is incorporated within the \u201cB\u201d of ABL<\/strong>, but its mission, values, and commitment to maritime markets endure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began with casualty investigation has evolved into a global technical consultancy<\/strong>, with marine surveyors, engineers, and consultants operating in more than 44 countries<\/strong> across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, Asia\u2011Pacific, and even the Pacific Islands. This global footprint enables rapid response, combining local market knowledge and in\u2011country expertise with a consistent global approach and multidisciplinary marine and engineering capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
