Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at ABL so far. \u202fWhat keeps you on your toes?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I spend a\u00a0considerable\u00a0amount of time\u00a0travelling\u00a0in the Southern African region\u00a0for attendances on board\u00a0various vessels for OVID inspections, Dynamic\u00a0Positioning<\/a>\u00a0trials,\u00a0MWS<\/a>\u00a0and Assurance<\/a> surveys.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The past year I have diversified into casualty response attendances<\/a>, supporting\u00a0an array of interesting surveys locally. When I am not traveling\u00a0for attendances, I coordinate operations\u00a0and business development\u00a0with my colleagues, continue with training and self-development, and supporting our\u00a0global\u00a0ABL colleagues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diversity\u00a0of the work keeps me on my toes, as well as the drive within\u00a0the ABL\u00a0Group to keep growing and learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What drew you to our industry and what keeps you passionate about it?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My father was in the merchant navy for some time before he settled for an office job in banking. His love for the sea and all things relating to ships was contagious. The bug bit me at a young age and I have been around ships ever since. I have been fortunate to have had a career spanning almost 40 years so far in the marine world, from military ships, to commercial diving, from ship building and commissioning, to inspections, surveys, and training. The sea doesn\u2019t take prisoners and sailors are a special collection of humans.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What keeps\u00a0me\u00a0passionate?\u00a0<\/strong>The constant opportunity to learn and grow,\u00a0and\u00a0our related contribution to the ongoing drive for operational standards in the marine\u00a0and offshore\u00a0industry\u00a0which is an\u00a0everchanging landscape.\u00a0The support regionally between colleagues is\u00a0immense,\u00a0and\u00a0allows me to draw on experience of\u00a0those colleagues\u00a0working in matured oil and gas segments globally.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Being part of the team that is expanding\u00a0and diversifying\u00a0ABL\u2019s customer support base in southern Africa<\/strong>, as well as introducing our Group services,\u00a0in\u00a0multiple business lines,\u00a0to emerging segments.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Establishing\u00a0and growing ABL\u00a0commercial entities and developing local talent in both Namibia and Mozambique<\/strong> is both challenging and exciting.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you see the future of\u00a0ABL\u00a0Services\u00a0evolving in Africa and in Namibia particularly, and what technical or operational developments will be most critical?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since the emergence of the oil and gas sectors in\u00a0the\u00a0southern African\u00a0waters, we have seen a\u00a0marked increase in the number of\u00a0seismic, construction,\u00a0drilling\u00a0 and\u00a0offshore support\u00a0vessels\/units calling in\u00a0at the various\u00a0ports.\u00a0These vessels (and the respective operators) require specialist services in way of DP, OVID and other marine assurance surveys which would\u00a0require regular\u00a0on board\u00a0attendances.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the deepwater drilling units will also require\u00a0additional\u00a0services such as rig inspections.\u00a0\u00a0The region is a rapidly developing O&G sector\u00a0and\u00a0ABL, as a global forerunner in the\u00a0offshore,\u00a0marine services and assurance markets,\u00a0carries\u00a0a considerable depth and scope of projects\u00a0across the sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most critical element currently is the capacity for access to the local markets\u00a0to\u00a0facilitate\u00a0the servicing of\u00a0the\u00a0operational market\u00a0demand and\u00a0to\u00a0facilitate\u00a0the\u00a0cross-skilling\u00a0of local mariners to transition from the\u00a0more traditional commercial\u00a0shipping environment to the O&G service sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond\u202fthe\u202fwork,\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0your favourite part about being part of\u202fthe\u202fABL\u202fteam\u202facross Africa? \u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ABL has\u00a0a\u00a0brilliant\u00a0global network of specialists\u00a0(including\u00a0both\u00a0our operations and support staff)\u00a0who\u00a0cover a\u00a0broad spectrum of energy and marine related\u00a0disciplines,\u00a0and\u00a0who are just a phone call away.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The high degree of collaboration certainly creates\u00a0the feeling\u00a0of being one big office.\u00a0On a personal note, I have enjoyed the opportunity to\u00a0once\u00a0again work\u00a0closely\u00a0with an old\u00a0friend and past\u00a0colleague who joined the ABL South Africa office\u00a0in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In an ideal world, I would love to see the achievement of\u00a0high standards\u00a0of people, training, technology and safety, without increasing the administrative and time loads on the mariners and offshore personnel.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But,\u00a0selfishly, if I could\u00a0change one thing for myself, it would be to\u00a0simply\u00a0teleport to the installation or vessel and avoid all the\u00a0hassles of international and domestic air\u00a0and\u00a0road travel\u00a0(\u201cbeam me up, Scotty\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
