To address this, solutions such as artificial&nbsp;beach nourishment&nbsp;solutions&nbsp;have been tested.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key figures highlight the urgency&nbsp;for action:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>50%<\/strong>&nbsp;of the low, sandy coastline of mainland Portugal is undergoing erosion.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1,380 hectares<\/strong>&nbsp;of territory lost between 1958 and 2023 due to coastal erosion.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u20ac350 million<\/strong>&nbsp;invested in coastal protection and&nbsp;defence&nbsp;interventions over the last 15 years.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u20ac16 million<\/strong>&nbsp;worth of&nbsp;damage caused to the coastline by Storm Hercules in 2014.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-information-to-action-solutions-from-the-mascot-project-nbsp\"><strong>From Information to Action: Solutions from the MASCOT Project<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Faced with these risks, it is crucial to&nbsp;anticipate&nbsp;and better understand what is happening on our coastline. Continuously&nbsp;monitoring&nbsp;the state and evolution of beaches, in space and time, is fundamental. But it is also vital to predict storms and flooding&nbsp;in a timely manner&nbsp;to protect citizens and property.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MASCOT project develops two innovative solutions based on data from the Copernicus European Marine Service (CMEMS), offering practical information that supports local decisions and contributes to the protection of coastal communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-86c0e7db27acd1b6df76a3229afaea6f\" id=\"h-use-case-1-nbsp-monitoring-nbsp-coastal-erosion-at-multiple-scales-nbsp\"><strong>Use Case 1:&nbsp;Monitoring&nbsp;Coastal Erosion at Multiple Scales<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;objective&nbsp;of this case study is to combine data from the&nbsp;Portuguese Environment Agency&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cosmo.apambiente.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COSMO<\/a>&nbsp;program with information from the Copernicus Marine Service&nbsp;in order to&nbsp;<strong>generate knowledge about the current state and evolution of the coastline<\/strong>&nbsp;on any beach along the Portuguese coast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this information, it will be possible to produce targeted analyses that support decision-making by local, regional, and national entities, depending on their specific needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-1024x473.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-125740\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-1024x473.png 1024w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-300x139.png 300w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-768x355.png 768w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1.png 1301w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-application-nbsp-monitoring-nbsp-coastal-interventions-at-critical-erosion-points-nbsp\"><strong>Application:&nbsp;Monitoring&nbsp;coastal interventions at critical erosion points<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One application of this monitoring data is to evaluate the effectiveness of coastal interventions on beaches with critical erosion, such as artificial sand nourishment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this information, it is possible to understand how long the effect of the intervention lasts, what the impact is along the coastline\u2014both in the intervened areas and in adjacent areas\u2014and to support local entities in assessing the state of their beaches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-application-1024x447.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-125741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-application-1024x447.png 1024w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-application-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-application-768x335.png 768w, https:\/\/abl-group.com\/abl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/use-case-1-application.png 1343w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7ee25cfae8c4933a51cd3f5a252a83f0\" id=\"h-use-case-2-predicting-the-impact-of-extreme-events-on-the-coast-nbsp\"><strong>Use Case 2: Predicting the Impact of Extreme Events on the Coast<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Storms, storm surges, and coastal flooding put communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems at risk. The MASCOT project develops advanced&nbsp;modelling&nbsp;tools, powered by data from the Copernicus Marine Service, that&nbsp;<strong>simulate the&nbsp;behaviour&nbsp;of storms in the ocean and their effect when they reach the coast<\/strong>.
